... Why People Drink Until They Can Barely Remember Their Own Name. Or What They Did Last Night/Week

As most of you should be aware of by now, drinking and partying has become quite a big problem in  modern society, mainly in the teenage and middle-aged world. I'm not sure where you're from, but in New Zealand there has been quite a few cases of people dying due to excessive alcohol consumption, retarded actions while intoxicated, driving under influence or a combination of any/all the factors mentioned.  The bottom line is: people are dying due to alcohol. And sadly, it's happening all around the world (maybe not the ones where they can't afford alcohol, let alone food - oh, poverty, why you so cruel?)

If you listen to the song "Get Smashed Gate Crash" (totally obsessed with it right now) by Hadouken!, you get a general idea of what its like. Here's an excerpt of the song lyrics - it doesn't sound too pretty, does it?

People being sick on the landing carpet,
Smoking up in the outside shed,
Passing out in the upstairs toilet,
Getting laid on the parents' bed.

Smashing up all the porcelain china,
We drank the alcohol cabinet clean,
But still that felt minor,
'til we put the Hi-Fi through the TV screen.

So why on earth do people do it? Alcohol does weird things to people. It can make some loosen up, some angry and some sad. It slows your reactions and it impairs your memory temporarily. A little alcohol is fine. I'm not questioning those who have a couple of beers and chill out, or have a few glasses of wine with dinner. I'm questioning those who do like 20 shots and can't walk straight afterwards
(-insert applause here for those who can walk straight afterwards- But that's not my point)

And for all those who don't drink excessively, but you encourage others to do so - you're just as bad, so don't think you're excluded in this discussion.

Why put yourself through that? Does it make you feel good that you wake up the next day with someone completely random next to you, and the sign from the local dairy at the foot of your bed? If you wanted to meet new people, go join social clubs or something - at least you won't be wondering what you two had gotten up to last night. If you want the damn sign so much, go buy one yourself - it'll probably cheaper than the amount of money you had spent on alcohol. If you're thirsty, just drink some bloody water - it's so much more accessible and you, surprise surprise, don't need a license.

Furthermore, if you can barely see clearly, what on earth makes you think you're capable of driving? Has it not occurred to you that you're probably gonna fail and cause the nearest power pole to topple over? Oh wait, never mind, you probably can't even think properly since you've decided to drown yourself with booze.

I don't understand why people would punish their liver and brain just to have fun - it's not all about the alcohol you consume. Drinking and being bad-ass may be "cool" to you but I don't think being cool should be your main concern when you're in a coma. Especially not when you're dead.

  1. As the add campaign goes, "Its not the drinking, its how we're drinking."
Teenagers have this mad respect for others who say they can drink so much in a single night, which can lead to you being in the "cool" group which is a reason for why teenagers drink. To stop kids drinking would either take 1 of 3 actions, some get all students to be seen as equals by each other (which is near impossible as even if you got rid of all materialistic possessions, the politicians will end up ruling) or get drinking to be seen as "uncool" (which again is very near to impossible as it is seen as an adult thing and kids want to be seen as adults) or lastly, have parents STOP being bloody ignorant in thinking that their kid wont be a problem with drinking and actually do something from an early age. After all that is where we learn most of who we want to be and who we will be. Look at Italy, how often do kids drink over there?? yet do you see all the crap that happens in Germany, England, America and especially here (New Zealand), happening over there?? NO. But why not? Because when they drink, they drink as a family, they take care of each other, and get this; their elders LEAD BY EXAMPLE.
As it is getting late, I will leave you with one last quote, "Monkey see, monkey do."

  3. @Dave, it's just sad knowing that people don't have any logic. If it was deemed "cool" to jump off cliffs, would people still be following?

  5. How is it stupid, who are you to determine the choices of others?

  6. Sorry I thought you were trolling

  7. Thinking of a way to rebut and say that, that is stupid but all i can think of now is natural selection and good ridence to those who are stupid enough to drink a lethal amount of drugs or alcohol.
But before I got to that different side of my usual perspective, its stupid because potentially great minds killing themselves much to early in their life, what sane person would choose to die?? Unless they are in a huge amount of physical pain or are about to die anyway; yea thats right, no one! There fore its upto the educators to show the young how to live a great life right to the end and not be cut short. However this doesnt mean we should have all this PC bull crap of not being able to do anything because its "potentially" dangerous, we should be able to do them! Nut this leads us back to the part about people dying and such which is what we DONT want, but what has turned this "potentially dangerous" event into a killer? In some unfortunate circumstances it is a complete freak accident that no one could have seen coming; but more often than that is when some idiot takes a short cut or is just completely idiotic themselves, which then leads to the other being killed! This could all be stopped if a little thing called common sense was a little more common...
    Bon appetit

  9. I'm a huge believer in civil liberties and rights, to which includes doing whatever you want to your own body, so I'm against banning or restricting it.

As for the culture, it's made up of pressure to drink more and more, the idea that you're not 'hard' if you can't drink 10 or more drinks. There's also a social side to it, since everyone seems to be doing it, and there's the simple one which is people like the feeling of being intoxicated somehow. People are ever-striving for a 'high' or a 'buzz' which they think they can get by taking more or taking something else.

By and large most people don't cause problems, I've never caused any damage while drunk and never been in trouble with the police for it. I have woken up next to people I regret and nearly pulled a James Webster, two mistakes I've learned from. It's all part of experiencing the world and I think people that are closed-minded make themselves naïve over time.

As for supply, parents these days are shocking. The teeny 14 year olds that get wasted every Saturday get it bought by their idiot parents. Many parents have no idea what their kids are up to, don't care what they get up to and haven't taught their kids to take care of themselves.

  10. See at least you learn from your mistakes. Some people don't. And sadly it's just some people ruining it for everyone. Same thing with the drug issue. People are all anti drugs because of all the stories about those who have sold their family for pot or whatever. But there are also people who are coping just fine without bothering anyone around them. I guess what I'm trying to point out here is that there's no need for you to continuously drink till you're blacked out. Maybe once or twice for the experience but no need for any more than that.
